Our 1 or 2 day tours are an excellent way of seeing many of Australia’s unique bird species. Birding Tours Australia operates many different trips around Newcastle, The Hunter Valley and Sydney. We can also organise tours around New South Wales, anywhere in Australia or in fact anywhere around the world. All our tours can be conducted at a pace to suit your needs from relaxed to extreme, but all will concentrate on locating as many species as possible across various habitats.
The secret to several of our tours is the variety of habitats that we can take you to in a short period of time. We usually try to finish with an hour or two looking for the local night birds where ever we end up.
A SAMPLE OF SOME OF OUR TOURS:
Tour 1: 8 Habitats
Starts in temperate coastal rainforest, before heading to areas of coastal mangroves, saltmarsh and tidal mudflats. Our next two stops are areas of wetlands surrounded by Dry Eucalypt forest. To finish off the day we drive up into the mountains to visit areas of Temperate Mountain Rainforest and Dry Eucalypt forest (8 distinctly different birding habitats). This is our main tour and we will see more species on this tour than any of our other tours.
Tour 2: The Waders Tour
This is a trip for the wader enthusiast & is designed to see as many species of waders as possible. Australia has recorded over 70 species of waders a
nd has many endemics and difficult species, some of which are stunning. Newcastle is the best place in the state to look for waders.
Tour 3: The Mountains Tour
2 days – We head up into the mountains to the Chichester State Forest and the World Heritage listed Barrington Tops National Park. We climb from sea level to 1500m to areas of Dry Eucalypt forest, lush Sub-Tropical rainforest, Alpine Meadows, Open Grassland, and the rare and beautiful Antarctic Beech Forests. This ancient forest is dripping with ferns and mosses and is often shrouded in mist and home to one of Australia’s rarest birds, the Rufous Scrub Bird.
Tour 4: The Speciality Tour
1 or 2 days – A specialist trip to look for some of the toughest birds in Australia. These include the rare, elusive & highly localised Rufous Scrub-bird (one of only two species in this family), Paradise Riflebird (the most southerly Bird-of-Paradise in the world), Superb Lyrebird(the worlds largest passerine) and Noisy Pitta. Other specialities will also be looked for.
Tour 5: The Parrot Tour
On this day-tour we concentrate on finding as many of the local parrot species as possible. Seventeen species reside in the tour area and depending on the time of year we should find most of them. We traverse numerous different habitats to locate parrots from the large Sulphur-crested Cockatoo to the small musk and little Lorikeets. This tour can be extended to find many of Australia’s other parrot species.
Tour 6: The Coast Trip
1 or 2 days – A very pleasant trip close to Newcastle to explore the extensive National Park & lake systems. We will visit many different habitats including wet & dry woodlands, rainforests, heathlands, wetlands and coastal for 1-2 days or combined with trip 4.
Tour 7: The Dry Country Tour
1 day – Starts by heading out west away from the coast, into much drier countryside. Dry forest areas, sandstone cliffs and fast flowing streams, dominate this area. From here we continue west into sparsely forested terrain dominated by eucalypt trees such as Ironbarks, Gums and Stringy-barks, with understorey shrubs being scarce in all but a few sites. This area is ornithologically significant because it is a transition zone between east-west and south-west habitats and therefore supports a wide variety of birds.
