Bustard Downs

Bustard Downs comprises of over 200 acres of privately owned ex-tobacco farms, at Maryfarms, situated between Mt. Molloy and Mt. Carbine, on the Mulligan Highway within easy access to Mt. Lewis, Julatten, Mt. Carbine, Lake Mitchell and is surrounded by Brooklyn Station.

Bustard Downs offers 3 accommodation options from budget Camping and Caravanning with fire-place & facilities to luxury king size beds, 20m swimming pool at our rustic Birdwatchers Farmstay Guesthouse Bed & Breakfast, or your own private self-contained vintage Farm Cottage on the bank of the Mary Creek with mountain views of the Great Dividing Range.

An excellent variety of inland bush and wet-tropic species to be found throughout the area and the property, with approx 7 km of private walking tracks, along creek banks, bushland, open grasslands and wetland. What to look for: Australian Bustard, Squatter Pigeon, Northern Fantail, Black-throated Finch, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Red-winged Parrot, Pale-headed Rosella, Restless Flycatcher, Peaceful, Diamond and Emerald Dove, Tawny Frogmouth, Barred Cuckoo-shrike, Scarlet, Yellow, Dusky, Brown, Brown-backed, Macleay’s, Bridled, Blue-faced and White-cheeked Honeyeaters, Bush Stone-curlew, Great Bowerbird, Olive-backed Sunbird, Spangled Drongo, Pheasant Coucal, Red-backed fairy-wren, Little and Azure Kingfisher and Blue-winged Kookaburra. Birds of prey include Black-breasted Buzzard, Pacific Baza, Whistling, Black, Square-tailed Letter-wing, and Black-shouldered Kites, Nankeen Kestrel, Brown and Grey Goshawk, Spotted Harrier, Wedge-tailed and Little Eagle. Migrants include Channel-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Koel, and a rare Yellow Wagtail reported by several birders in April 2016.

We love birdwatchers to share their sightings and photos adding to our 160+ species listed on our Bird list. Birders report seeing 50 – 90 species here on Bustard Downs. By staying here you are contributing directly to a small organic farm and in turn supporting a rural community. Bustard Downs is not open to visitors, just our paying guests.
