Pungalina Pungalina
Is a 500,000 acre wilderness property in remote northern Australia (Gulf area). It is a comfortable tented safari camp for up to 10-12 people that is fully accommodated. The location is specifically designed for fly-ins as we have our own airstrip and everything is provided, although access is also by 4WDs. The drive from the gate to the homestead is 2 hours.

Activities include barramundi fishing, canoeing, gorges, river cruises, limestone caves, bush walking and bird watching etc. The safari camp has 6 twin share tents in a lush tropical setting within meters of a warm thermal spring. The camp is fully accommodated with a full time chef so you are really pampered. Alcohol is available for purchase... beer, wine, champagne, and some limited mixed drinks.
Guided tours are taken each day to different activities of your choosing.

The price is $475 per person for 24 hrs and includes everything except your drinks.

As Pungalina is so remote, special and exclusive, a 7 day tour from Melbourne with Kirkhope Aviation is a speciality that spends four and a half days at Pungalina. The flight across Australia visits places such as Birdsville and an overnight on a cattle station. The return flight overnights at an Opal town. This trip requires a minimum of 6 people and the cost include all flights, meals, accommodation, tours and GST. This may particularly appeal to the busy corporate person who may wish to take a short break (4-5 days off work) with some friends, or it may appeal to the corporate team building type activity. Our aircraft takes a maximum of 8 passengers although the main limitation is Pungalina for say 10 - 12 clients. Discounts apply for groups of 6 - 8 people. A major attraction is the "small group tour" and the personalised attention you subsequently get while flying across Australia and then visiting this remote beautiful wilderness of Pungalina. If you want a unique tour away from bustling tourists then this is for you."

Here is the latest update:
Escape the crowds to this unique wilderness in the Northern Territory where there is only a maximum of 12 clients on Pungalina Station's magnificient property.

Pungalina will open for business after the Easter break and remain open until end October 2007 weather permitting. This year Pungalina escaped the cyclones and just had a healthy 600 mm over the wet season. Consequently the roads will be open soon for 4 WD access and of course the airstrip is ready and waiting for action.

Those interested in Limestone Caves will be pleased to know that more have been explored and opened during the latter part of last year and the Victorian Speleological Society will once again spend a few weeks this June mapping and opening more areas. More vehicles, canoes and fishing boats have been purchased and so many options are available for all ages and capabilities. For the keen fisherman who wants a barra they should be at Pungalina during April / May or Late August to October for the best results in the warmer water.

Bird watching is a specialty with now over 140 types sighted so far.... see the website www.pungalinasafaris.com.au.

Air tours operated by Kirkhope Aviation from Melbourne to Pungalina will operate as charters on demand. These are 7 day trips with 6 - 8 passengers that cross Australia visiting opal towns. cattle stations , Birdsville and the wet channel county with 3 - 4 days at Pungalina . Clients wishing to go on an air tour should make contact through the Pungalina website.

Birdwatching Aficionados - Jonny Schoenjahn
I specialize in customised birdwatching tours and operate exclusively on request. There are no standard tours or regular schedules. I only take one booking at a time with a maximum of 4 people. This means you will be the only customers on the tour and my attention is focused on your pleasure.

All tours are accommodated in personally selected, quality accommodation. The exception being tours such as through the Great Sandy Desert in search of the rare Princess Parrot, where we will camp. My vehicle is a very comfortable, spacy and well equipped Toyota Landcruiser 4WD. With most tours you have the option to 'fly and drive', the choice is yours.

The areas I visit include:

  • the Kimberley in the North of Western Australia,
  • the South-West corner of Western Australia, in particular Perth - Albany,
  • the Kakadu National Park and the area around Darwin in the Northern Territory,
  • far north-east Queensland and the Iron Range National Park / Cape York Peninsula,
  • the interior of Australia with Ayer's Rock, Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks, etc.,
  • and South East Australia, in particular Melbourne - Sydney, and Tasmania.

I conduct special trips into the remote Outback, particularly the many deserts, or criss-cross through Australia in search of the ten endemic Grasswren species. If there are particular birds you want to see just let me know. I would be pleased to work out a unique tour for you.

For further details please check my listing under Interstate Tour Operators.

Alan McBride - Birder

Alan has been leading bird groups and individuals around Australia and the region for over 30 years now. His experience in planning and organising trips, finding the birds and other critters is well grounded. Alan has led well over 100 trips all around this land. He founded the now famous deep water pelagics off Wollongong and Sydney and has been on at least 800 pelagic excursions - enough to not bother with medication! From a birding perspective he has found a number of firsts for the region too and has seen over 732 birds in Australia alone.
